Library Card Eligibility
Library cards are available at no charge to the following:

  • Residents of Forsyth County
  • Property or business owners in Forsyth County
  • Employees of the public school system in Forsyth County
  • Employees of Forsyth County government
  • Students currently enrolled at the Forsyth Campus of Lanier Technical College, Forsyth Campus of North Georgia College and State University, or Gainesville State College

To get a library card you will need to present proof of residency, such as a valid driver's license, utility bill, voter’s registration card, insurance card, or name badge or pay stub from Forsyth County government or Forsyth County public school system.

A library card may be obtained at any age. If the applicant is under 18, the signature of a parent or guardian is required. Anyone who does not meet one of the criteria listed above may obtain an out-of-county library card for an annual fee of $60.00.

Online Library Card Application
A 21-day temporary library card number, good for using most online resources from home as well as for placing up to three holds on library materials, may be obtained by filling out the online library card application(click on the link that says "click here to register now"). To check out materials, or to continue using online resources beyond the 21-day temporary period, applicants must appear in person at a library branch and show acceptable identification in order to receive a permanent library card number.

ExpressCheck
You will be greeted at the library’s service desks by our friendly, knowledgeable staff members. For your convenience, we also provide self-service options with ExpressCheck.  ExpressCheck is not meant to replace library staff. It is an additional, convenient tool available to patrons who wish to use it. ExpressCheck enables staff to spend more time working directly with patrons and to continue to provide a high level of customer service.

Renewals
Materials may be renewed up to two times if there are no hold requests on the items. Convenient renewals are accessible 24/7 with your library card number and PIN through two methods of ExpressServices: the Automated Telephone Services at 770-781-9865 and the library’s online catalog. During open hours courteous library staff will assist you at the Circulation Desk at one of the branches or you can call 770-781-9840 for assistance.

Fines
To encourage the prompt return of materials so that others may use them, the library charges 20ยข per day per item for late returns. When a patron’s fines and fees total $10.00 or more, the library card is blocked until the total goes under $10.00. In addition, when a patron owes $10.00 or more in any combination of fines, fees, or the value of long overdue materials, the account is referred to Unique Management Services, Inc., a collection agency that specializes in libraries, and an additional processing fee is added.
